Sumora — savings habits workshops

We teach saving as a way of living, not a chore.

How Sumora came to be

Sumora started in 2019 in a rented meeting room on Lebuh Pantai — three chairs, a whiteboard, and a simple question: why do so many people who want to save more, still not manage to?

The answer, we quickly found, had very little to do with income. It had to do with habit. With rhythm. With the small, forgettable decisions made every Tuesday and Thursday that compound — quietly, invisibly — into a very different financial picture by December.

Our founders, Mei-Ling and Razif, had spent years in adult education and community finance work respectively. What they noticed was a gap: plenty of content told people what to do with money, but very little helped people actually change the daily texture of how they handled it.

That gap is what Sumora occupies. We work with people who are not in crisis, not looking for tips, but who want to settle into a quieter, more intentional relationship with their money — one small jar, one weekly check-in, one honest conversation at a time.

Our Mission

To make the daily practice of saving accessible, kind, and genuinely suited to how Malaysians live — so that building a financial cushion feels more like tending a garden than running a race.

Our Values

  • Patience over pressure — no urgency, no panic
  • Honesty over optimism — we talk about what's actually hard
  • Practicality over theory — every tool tested in real life
  • Community over competition — we grow alongside our participants

How we hold the quality of what we offer

Educator-Led Sessions

All workshops are facilitated by trained adult educators, not salespeople. Content is reviewed and updated each quarter to stay relevant to current conditions.

Data Privacy & Safety

Participant information is held securely and never shared with third parties for commercial purposes. We comply with Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010.

Curriculum Review Process

Every programme material goes through a structured review cycle. Participant feedback is collected after every session and used in subsequent revisions.

General Education — Not Advice

Sumora provides general financial habits education. We are not licensed financial advisors, and our content is designed accordingly — always transparent about that distinction.

Capped Group Sizes

Workshop numbers are deliberately small so facilitators can respond to each participant meaningfully. We turn away registrations rather than overcrowd a session.

Certificate of Attendance

The Steady Savings Programme issues a printed and digital certificate of attendance to participants who complete all sessions — a tangible record of the journey.

Savings education that respects where you are

Most financial education in Malaysia focuses on investment products, property, and large capital decisions. Sumora works in a quieter but equally important space: the daily texture of saving. The question is not what to invest in — it is how to build the consistent behaviour that makes any larger decision possible in the first place.

Our workshops draw on behavioural science around habit formation, adapted into plain language and practical tools suited to urban Malaysian life. We take the position that saving is a skill developed through repetition, reflection, and gentle accountability — not willpower alone.

Based in George Town, Penang, we work with salaried employees, small business owners, young adults just starting out, and parents who want to model healthier money habits at home. Sessions are conducted in English with conversational flexibility in Bahasa Malaysia when needed.

Sumora is registered in Pulau Pinang and has been operating continuously since 2019. We maintain small cohorts by design, and we are not affiliated with any financial institution, product provider, or brokerage.
